Back like I never left. It's been a while (longer than I would like to admit) since I've posted a new look, but I've returned in an entirely new city with close to what you'd call a new wardrobe. Recently, I took the plunge and decided to move myself to New York City to further pursue writing. One, month-long dilapidated sublet, a litany of job interviews and many tears later I'm reasonably settled in and ready to serve looks 💁🏾.
One thing that I quickly learned about NYC style is that there are Brooklyn 'fits and then there are Manhattan 'fits. Discerning what is appropriate in which borough is essential to avoiding awkward judgement stares at Sunday brunch. Not that anybody really GAF, but it never hurts to understand the crowd. This is what I like to call a quasi-borough look. You've got the vomit-inducing hipster vibe with a t-shirt heralding a band I certainly do not listen to (Don't judge me. Check your Thrasher shirt first!) but tied up in the class of thigh-high boots and a tailored coat.
First things first, coats are fundamental.
It's the dead of winter, but there is not a New Yorker in site letting that infringe on style. A trusty puffer jacket will always have a place in our closets, especially if it's oversized and extra floofy the way Rihanna likes it, but this city is all about smart, statement outwear.
My camel ASOS coat has been a tried and true player for some time, but a new city (and a gift-giving holiday) is as good of an excuse as any to add to the collection. Of course, I headed over to the website and perused for a new baby. I'm a huge fan of this trench look for its subtle detailing that makes it unique while the chocolate shade keeps it neutral and minimal for versatile pairing. It reminds me a bit of London Fog meaning that I feel particularly British whenever shrugging this on.
The fit of this coat is alllllmoooosssttt perfect. ASOS gets props for trendy styles but it's nearly impossible to find the right damn arm lengths when you're pushing 6 feet! But for the unbeatable price and waist sash that does me so many favors, I'll turn the other cheeks at those highwater sleeves.
If you haven't yet indulged in Beyoncé's Ivy Park collection, I'm here to tell you to let go and just do it. There is something in our ancestral instincts that cause us to look at celebrity brands with sharp side eyes and much skepticism, even when it's coming from Queen Bey herself. You must move with caution, but with Ivy Park you can feel free to go crazy.
These leggings are my absolute new favorites. So much so that I've bought them in grey and burgundy as well. They are hella body shaping and comfortable AF making for great gym gear and even better athleisure wear that makes everyone think you went to the gym. My only caveat is the large Ivy Park logo on the leg that is pretty unsightly outside of Soul Cycle. However, it's nothing a casual outfit or a pair of thigh high boots can't handle.
I will spend only two sentence on this t-shirt. I like the way band t-shirts look and no, I have no shame not being familiar with said band. Moving on.
And now, for what you've all been waiting for : these freaking amazing shoes! It's no secret that thigh highs are having a MAJOR moment right now. Almost as ubiquitous as Stan Smith Adidas, catch these on the stems of every It girl you follow on Instagram.
Naturally I had to have my own, but thigh highs don't come easy to larger feet. I drooled over a pair of Stuart Weitzmans that were overpriced yet more beautiful than sleeping until noon on a Saturday. In the end, they made my legs look like encased sausages. Probably better off that way.
Just when I was about to give up on my search, Just Fab came through in the clutch! Every time I promise myself I'm going to cancel my subscription there is always an extremely good pair of shoes that keep around for the following month — and this was no different. I used a member credit I reluctantly accrued from failing to "skip the month" and happily took home these boots. All I can say is high thighs and high comfort for the win!
Tell me about your favorite smart jacket!
